The website for Russian developer Mundfish describes Atomic Heart as " an adventure first-person shooter, events of which unfolds in an alternate universe during the high noon of the Soviet Union." The use of the phrase " High Noon" isn't just a poetic flourish, but a likely a reference to the " Noon Universe," a science-fiction saga written from the 1960's to the 1980's by Russian Science Fiction authors Arkady and Boris Strugatsky (the same creator of the seminal novel Roadside Picnic). For every cynical Party Apparatchik in the Eastern Bloc, there were genuine believers in the promises of socialism, that the sacrifices and secret police of the present would give way to a glittering future of peace, plenty, and freedom. The developers of Mundfish, by designing the hi-tech game environments of Atomic Heart, have tried to tap into those 20th century hopes for a working socialist future, while not glossing over the corruption and wretched governance endemic in the real-world Soviet system. Behind the veneer of brazen propaganda, politicians and business magnates in the West broke into cold sweats over the possibility of Communist infiltrations and uprisings. From a present perspective, it's easy to assume this outcome was a historical inevitability. ![]() The Cold War ended with the 'victory' of the United States and the fall of the Soviet Union, which collapsed under a combination of economic mismanagement, the drain of wars and disasters like Chernobyl, and the mass uprisings against an oppressive one-party state unwilling to reform. ![]()
